A few years ago, my wife bought me a belt sander for Christmas. It was a Makita 3×24 inch model. At the time, we were transitioning to one income so it was returned for the money.

After getting some overtime pay, I decided it was time to get a belt sander. In looking at various DIY and tool websites, I learned a 3×21 inch belt sander is considered a more standard size. The 3×24 we had was nice but I did notice there were fewer options for replacement belts at the hardware store compared to a 3×21 size.

After using this sander on a few projects, all we can say is how amazing it is. No matter how long we operated it or how rough the wood was, the sander was a star performer. Not once did it lose power or feel overwhelmed. The 8.8 amp motor is definitely a champion.

The 3×21 size of this model is perfect. It’s not too big and not too small. Changing belts is a breeze with a simple switch mechanism that loosens the belt. All in all, it took me about 30 seconds.

Adjusting the tracking is also quick and easy. This is one of the most important features when considering a belt sander because not all brands are created equal in this department.

To do this, there’s a little black knob on the front left of the unit. A simple turn in either direction adjusts the belt. Makita also adds an auto tracking feature which works very well. Good job, Makita engineers.

Another plus about the sander is the variable speed which operates from 690 to 1440 feet per minute. This helps fine tune it based on the needs of the user. To change speed, there’s a dial numbered from 1 to 5.

The dust collection system is a winner, too. It comes with a cloth bag that opens with little mess. The bag also dons on and off with ease.

In closing, one should know when it comes to belt sanders, there’s a lot of junk on the market. Makita, however, makes some of the best belt sanders you’ll find. If you’re looking for a quality belt sander, the 3×21 model from Makita should make you very happy.
